Evolution

Prior to their time living on land, it is believed that plants had evolved from green algae which exclusively inhabited water. The water provided the plants structural support, nutrients, aided in dispersal,  and helped prevent desiccation. However, they needed to increase their genetic diversity and so they had moved onto land to accomplish exactly this.
